Project abstract
The project concerns magnetic thrust bearings for hydropower applications. By having a magnetic thrust bearing, better control can be achieved since the stiffness and damping of the shaft can be actively controlled. The project involves electromagnetic and controller design.
Summary of work
A permanent magnet thrust bearing for a synchronous generator test rig at Uppsala University has been designed, constructed, installed and tested. Further, an electromagnetic thrust bearing for the 10 MW hydropower generator Porjus U9 has been designed, constructed, and tested.
By using magnetic thrust bearings designed for dynamic loads and paired with modern power electronics and controllers in combination with mechanical thrust bearings, satisfactory dynamic performance can be achieved even for units with Kaplan turbines, resulting in more efficient and robust thrust bearing system.
A new method to magnetically balance synchronous machines has emerged. The concept is now patented and has been verified in a small scale device. A pilot installation is about to happen in 2018. Further higher torque control (including during startup) has been achieved with the help of current controlled field winding setup.
