Distributed Optimization Based Mechanism Design for Optimal Transmission Coordination

Project abstract

In this project, the goal is to develop market mechanisms, based on distributed optimization algorithms, which are to be implemented by the market overseer, in such a way that, the individual Transmission System Operators (TSOs) are incentivized to coordinate their investments for both horizontal (i.e. transmission) and vertical (i.e. integration of transmission and generation) expansions, in order to maximize the welfare of a bigger geographical region. Particularly in the context of the Scandinavian/Nordic region, the individual TSOs typically don’t communicate much with each other when it comes to horizontal and vertical coordination and are usually interested in those planning activities only to maximize their own utility. However, it is crucial to know what the neighboring TSOs are doing, in order for effective and efficient transmission and generation expansion. It is expected that the outcomes of the current project will shed light on such planning.

Summary of work

2017 October-November. Came up with a market mechanism design for meeting the above-mentioned requirement, based on “Asynchronous Distributed Stochastic Unit Commitment” and its solution by “Block Coordinate Sub-gradient Descent Algorithm.”
