Project abstract
For the next generation of smart distributed power systems, switching devices must be capable of handling more frequent switching operations. For current contact materials, this would lead to a reduced service life or increased maintenance costs. However, with better contact materials, these consequences can be mitigated.
Early results in SweGRIDS project MTL8 indicate that metal/graphene composites can offer a significant material improvement in some aspects. Some tribological properties of the metal/graphene composites actually exceed the test system capabilities. To fully identify and characterize the true potential of the materials, this project will adapt and update the current test system to include: new sample geometries that increase the contact stresses, increased temperatures, and alternative surrounding media. This adaptation and the added work package will also result in an increase in test capacity, which will strengthen also MTL8.
