Project abstract
This project aims at the Synthesis and Characterization of Novel rare-earth (RE)-free high performance permanent magnet materials.
The objective is to single out magnetic materials with (BH)max in the interval 100 - 150 kJ/m3, which is much higher than for ferrite and Alnico magnets but lower than for the best rare-earth metal based magnets. This will require that Br of the new materials is close to 1 T and that Hci is found somewhere in the range 0.5 - 1 MA/m. The critical temperature that we target is 600 K or larger.
This kind of novel-magnets could be used in the clean energy field, both in electricity generation and consumption areas: like wind turbine, compact and high energy-efficiency motors, cars, etc.
Summary of work
2015. Some high percentage ferromagnetic tau phase samples of (MnAlC, MnAlB,MnAlGa) have been synthesized, ball milled, and magnetic characterized. The MnAlC ferromagnetic tau phase high temperature thermal stability also have been analyzed. The MnAlC ferromagnetic phase forming condition become more and more clear and under control.
2016. The tau phase MnAlC samples have been cryomilled, and get very fine powders suitable for making good magnets.
2016. A method has been developed that is suitable for industry to make high performance rare earth free permanent magnet MnAl powder.
2017. Further development of microstructural control throuch milling and flash heating has been developed. Knowledge transfer to Höganäs AB on how to produce a high quality material. Initial test on how to produce permanent magnets through aligning and pressing powder in magnetic field has been initiated. This will continue during 2018.
2018. Powder magnetic field aligning and pressing have been tried for several times and got some good results; the pressing process could be further optimized.
