Project abstract

In this project, a new Silver-Graphene oxide (AgGO) nanocomposite has been developed as a potential sliding electrical contact for heavy-duty switching devices in smart grids. The new composite combines good electrical and tribological properties and such a combination is usually a major challenge in the field of materials science. A new synthesis protocol, for improving the dispersion of Graphene oxide flakes in the Silver matrix, has been developed. Purification of the raw materials, optimization of sintering parameters and the characterization of the nanocomposites have been done in collaboration between Ångström laboratory, Biomedical center at Uppsala University and ABB Corporate research centers (Sweden and Switzerland). A patent application on the new composite and its production method has been filed. Long-term properties of the new composite have been preliminary evaluated by prototype testing at ABB Corporate Research Center in Västerås.
