Project abstract

In this project a new manufacturing route for functional electrical insulation material using polymer nanocomposites. The desired dielectrical properties (conductivity, dielectric constant, loss etc) are tailored by polymer grafting from nanoparticles, allowing well-defined particle dispersion in the polymer matrix. Structural characterization of nanoparticle interfaces and the manufactured materials has been done in collaboration with IREC in Barcelona, and at the University of Manchester. The desired molecular structures are based on input from material simulations performed within a related project (Fritjof Nilsson). Long-term properties and reliability of the nanocomposites are addressed in collaboration with the projects of Wangshu Li and Richard Andersson.


Summary of work

2012-2014 Successful new route of ATRP polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates onto Al2O3 and ZnO nanoparticles & successful dispersion in an insulating polymer matrix.

2013 Successful cleavage of polymer grafts.

2013-2016 Identification of the critical parameters for controlling polymer graft density and polymer chain length and particle morphology.

2014-2016 Morphological characterization of nanocomposites completed and compared with material simulations and electrical data.

2014-2016 Dielectric spectroscopy analysis and resistivity measurements of silicone rubber nanocomposites filled with modified and unmodified ZnO nanoparticles.

2014-2015 Successful covalent and ionic linkage of acrylates and methacrylates to graphene oxide followed by dispersion in silicone rubbers and EBA.

2015 Silanization of silica nanoparticles and development of superhydrophobic nanostructured surface morphology with deicing properties applicable for electrical insulation.

2016 Pervaporation studies of grafted GO as separation membrane. Tuning by the flake-to-flake distance.

2016 Shape-memory materials of matrix-free GO composites detected.

2016 Characterization of field-grading dielectrical properties of rGO composites.

2012. Best-poster prize at SweGRIDS annual conference, Stockholm, December, for "Functional Polymer Nanocomposites for High-Voltage Insulation Application".

2014. Three-month research visit to University of Manchester, England, September-December, to work with graphene / graphene-oxide nanocomposites.

2016. Research visit to Duisburg-Essen Universität, Essen, Germany, for 1.5 months during March/April, funded by KIC InnoEnergy. The development of separation membranes of modified GO and testing of the water/ethanol separation by a pervaporation set-up.
