Project abstract

Series compensation is widely used in long power transmission lines, for reasons including increased power transfer capability, improved voltage profile, reduced transmission losses, and improved transient stability. It is performed by fixed or variable capacitors that are connected in series with the transmission line. The capacitors are protected from overvoltage during the flow of high fault currents by using parallel varistors, spark gaps etc., backed up by a bypass breaker. Fault currents activate the protection devices and during any external or internal fault the compensated line demonstrates highly nonlinear and time varying characteristics. Distance protection is a popular method for protecting transmission lines, as it can operate locally and is independent of communication link between the protected line segments. It operates on the basis of measuring line impedance and by comparing it with pre-fault values. The nonlinear behavior of the series compensated line due to the capacitor's protection devices poses a challenge in measuring the line impedance accurately. The distance relay faces directional and reach problems in this situation. There are existing methods implemented in protection relays to solve this problem, but they do not fully redress the problem and they have mainly been applied with low levels of series compensation such as 30%. Several factors, including addition of new wind-parks and higher loading of lines, are driving further adoption of series compensation and higher compensation levels, sometimes even more than 100% of the protected line segment. This requires further investigations, to find the limitations of using distance protection in highly compensated lines, and should improve current methods and possibly develop new techniques to use distance protection.
