Project abstract
The research project deals with a new diagnostic method for high-voltage tunnel-laid AC cables with the aim of achieving sensitive detection and characterization of degradation of polymeric systems used for cable insulation, based on gas emissions from the insulating materials.
Summary of work
2015. One test setup has been completed and tests have been conducted on basic test-setups with promising results that can be treated as a proof-of-concept. A second test setup is under construction to test basic material parameters. An extensive literature study is half-finished on both material properties of cable insulation as well as on recent sensor developments. The sensor part of this study has been completed. Further investigations in different types of gas sensors have been undertaken after the initial tests with a canonical corona test-setup.
2016. A second prototype has been finalized and is currently being used for determination of the working properties of different gas sensors which are intended to be used in the final application in order to quantify their suitability to detect the fault gases from cable faults. The second prototype will also be used to evaluate the fault gases which can be expected from the degradation of XLPE due to high electrical stresses and how permeable an XLPE barrier is to these gases.
[in later years the project has been at reduced rate due to other work duties besides PhD studies]
