Project abstract

The entirely passive cooling of the marine substation, developed at Uppsala University, is based on conduction and natural convection. Insufficient cooling may lead to an accumulation of heat in the vessel, affecting the lifetime and the efficiency of the components. Offshore measurements are performed (with temperature sensors which measure the temperature at a single point, and possibly with an infrared camera), lab experiments are carried out on single components, and thermal 3D-modeling with a CFD-software (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is implemented. This will help to identify hot-spots, to improve the placement and the design of electrical components, and to investigate alternative cooling and temperature monitoring solutions.


Summary of work

2016. An experimental setup was designed and the positioning of multiple heat sources mounted on a common heatsink plate was optimized.
